Network configuration for Fedora 7

This document tries to explain how to configure a network interface on a machine running Fedora Linux 7 to be usable on our Laptop Network. If things arn't clear please let us know.

Recent versions of Fedora default to network settings which will work without needing changes. Therefore most Fedora users can probably ignore most of this. However you may have needed to alter them to use another network, so this document describes the expected settings.

Network tcp/ip settings

While logged in go to the System Administration Network menu item.

This will launch the Network Config tool, which will prompt for an administration password.

You may want to check that the device may be activated by users and/or automatically.

Check the Automatically obtain... item to dhcp - this should be the default anyway. Click on the OK button.

If you use different network settings in different places, you can use the Profile menu to save different sets of network settings.

Then close the Network Config tool.

Use DHCP

The new settings should take effect at once. If they do not you may need to disable/re-enable the network interface, or disconnect/re-connect the network cable.

Other configs

This setup has been tested on Fedora 7. Configuration should be very similar for other fairly recent versions of Fedora. For details on how to configure network interfaces on other versions of Fedora please refer to the documentation provided with the system or contact your local computer support staff.
