Wireless configuration for Ubuntu 8.04

This document tries to explain how to configure a wireless network on a machine running Ubuntu Linux 8.04 to be usable on the Unencrypted.maths.cam.ac.uk wireless network. If things arn't clear please let us know.

Recent versions of Ubuntu default to network settings which will work without needing changes, you should see the networks appear in the network roam list, from which you can simply select Unencrypted.maths.cam.ac.uk. Therefore most Ubuntu users can probably ignore most of this. However you may have needed to alter them to use another network.

Network tcp/ip settings

Log into the machine as a user with Admin privelages and go to the System Administration Network menu item.

This will launch the Network Settings tool, click on Unlock which will launch the Authentication tool and prompt for your administration password. Enter the password and then click on Authenticate.

Then pick the Wireless network, and click on Properties.

In the setting check the Enable roaming mode, and click on the OK button.

You could manually specify a patricular Wireless network here, but that would only be needed if the other default settings need to be changed.

Roam mode for wireless

With roaming enabled for wireless networking you should see a tool in the panel towards the top right of the desktop, which will let select the name (technically the ESSID) of the wireless network to connect to.

Network tool roaming

The new settings should take effect at once. If they do not you may need to disable/re-enable the network interface.

Other configs

This setup has been tested on Ubuntu 8.04. Configuration should be very similar for other fairly recent versions of Ubuntu. For details on how to configure network interfaces on other versions of Ubuntu please refer to the documentation provided with the system or contact your local computer support staff.
